  • Dirk is a triptych representing the actor Dirk Bogarde. For Fowler, Bogarde’s “…strength as an actor is in the power of his presence”, and he is one of her personal icons. The three depictions form an exercise in tonal subtlety, with the freeze-frame format reminiscent of a Warhol screen test and serving to highlight the minute differences between each drawing. Exemplifying the artist’s sensitivity towards her subject matter, the interplay of the use of light, expression and form grants the triptych an acute sense of attentiveness and clarity. In each frame, Fowler concentrates on the delicate expressive variations of Bogarde’s face, so that the renditions showcase her strength at bringing poise and movement to the inherent motionlessness of a drawing. As with many of Fowler’s works, she extracts a seemingly fleeting and insignificant moment from a scene. Scrutinizing every detail, she wraps the viewer in her own admiration for the subject.
