“The tragedy was the way he died. The memorial was his masterpiece in many ways” - Christophe Von Hohenberg This drawing is derived from a photograph of the artist Robert Mapplethorpe arriving at Andy Warhol’s 1987 memorial service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Manhattan. The service saw a cavalcade of celebrities from the worlds of Hollywood, fashion, music and art arriving to pay their respects to Warhol in front of a crowd of fans — of which Warhol would have approved. Here, Mapplethorpe is depicted during the latter part of his life. Fowler captures a present vulnerability focusing on the visible signs of his degenerative illness. Drawn on postcard sized, sepia coloured card, the artist has imbued this image with a sense of sorrow, age and nostalgia. This image seems to lament and pay quiet tribute to two of the artist’s personal icons.
