Galerie Suzanne Tarasieve will be presenting a selection of Nina’s work in their group exhibition Circonvolutions.
Circonvolutions features nine contemporary artists whose works use clothing and textiles to reflect on our relationship to the body, space, and memory—shifting between the intimate and the political, the visible and the hidden.
Through the virtuosity of her charcoal drawing, Nina Mae Fowler (1981, Great Britain) revisits 1950s Hollywood imagery to expose its mechanisms of idealization, power, and exclusion. Her drawing practice is not limited to the image: framing, sculpture and mirroring are an integral part of the work and extend the narrative in every visible detail. The ambiguity of her work lies in the striking gap between the technical finesse—almost hypnotic—and the muted violence of the themes addressed. The work Butter, exhibited for the first time and inspired by Joseph Losey's film Secret Ceremony (1968), is a striking example: in this portrait of Elizabeth Taylor, captured at a particularly dramatic moment in the film, the crumpled sheet framing the face becomes a shroud, emphasizing the intensity and vulnerability of the actress's expression.
