Artnow Gallery presents this joint exhibition showcasing photographer Edith Held alongside Nina Mae Fowler.

"For this exhibition I was asked to hang beside German photographer Edith Held. Her name brought to my mind a long standing interest in the Hollywood costume designer - Edith Head. Now felt like the right time to make a series of work based around this formidable woman.I have also been looking intensely at the archive of Thérèse Le Prat, a female artist born in 1895. Again, the connection between Prat’s photography of theatre actors and Edith Held’s work sang out."

"In her portrait works, Edith Held stages famous personalities in unseen ways and creates a stage for previously unseen people to tell their stories. The photographs from her oneshot series are created as staged portraits in which the opportunities for the perfect image are consciously limited. Held works with analogue photography and uses only one film with ten negatives for each portrait ... In Held's "Shootings" the staging has to be perfect, as with every single shot the opportunity for a repeat is reduced, and with the last "shot" is clear: there is no other chance.”
